2. Canon Character Information

Name: Raven Darkholme | Mystique

PB: Jennifer Lawrence

Journal: [personal profile] hidingnolonger

Age: ...This is an approximation. Raven ages physically slower, but is far more young minded than her brother Charles. I'm guessing her physical age is somewhere around 27, 28 (she is possibly older than this - and quite likely older than Charles, who might be in his early 30s. We really don't know), but mentally, she is likely around 20, 21.

Appearance: Raven can...choose to appear however she likes. Generally, she takes the form of a younger female with long, slightly wavy blond hair and hazel eyes - aka Jennifer Lawrence.

However, Raven's true form is much, much different. She's athletic and toned and most notably - blue. Her skin has an almost scale-like appearance and her fingertips almost resemble claws. Her hair is a vivid red and slicked back, and her eyes are an almost cat-like yellow. Though human(oid - classification is mutant) Raven more resembles an otherworldly creature or alien when in her natural form.

History:

obligatory wiki link.

There is not much known about Mystique’s history, especially prior to her arrival at the Xavier household. Raven appears to be the same age as Charles when she was attempting to steal food from his house, though her exact age is unknown and not stated. She took the form of Charles's mother and attempted to mislead him, but was unable to do so because of the boy's abilities. He immediately saw past her disguise and was thrilled that he wasn't the only one out there that had an ability, the only 'different' one. He invited her to live with him and his family, which Raven accepts.

Many years later, Raven accompanied Charles to England under the claim of being his sister. During this time, Raven worked as a waitress while he studied at Oxford University, specializing in Genetics. She constantly had to hide her appearance, which Raven began to resent. She was anything but proud of her true form, and asked Charles after an evening out if he would date her. His answers were hurtful to Raven, though at the time he did not realize this to be the case.

Charles eventually graduated, and to celebrate, they went to a pub where Charles was approached by CIA agent Moira MacTaggert. She had a request of him - an expert in genetics - and that was to help capture the mutant Sebastian Shaw, who was coordinating behind the scenes terrorist acts. Charles accepted, and Raven went with him to CIA headquarters.

Initially Charles's presentation was shrugged off - at least until he demonstrated an ability to read minds. Unfortunately, this only raised suspicion that he was a spy and chaos ensued until Raven stood up and demonstrated her own shapeshifting ability. They were ordered to be locked down, but the Man in Black stepped forward and offered his facility for use. They don't go there immediately, however - instead they have a lead on Shaw and first attempt to capture him. They are unsuccessful, but Charles rescues Erik Lensherr from drowning as the other man attempted to raise a submarine.

Charles brings Erik to the facility where they meet a young Hank McCoy. Raven and Hank are instantly smitten with each other. Raven considers Hank 'beautiful' with his mutated feet and there is an instant, budding attraction between them. He reveals later to Raven that he is working on a serum to cure the physical mutation, but leaves his physical abilities intact. Requesting a blood sample of her, he tells her that he believes that her DNA and her ability holds the key to perfecting it.

Charles, using a mutant locating device (Cerebro) in order to recruit more mutants, and Raven takes it upon herself to either give everyone codenames, or come up with one themselves, and she takes the name Mystique.

During a mission to Russia where Charles, MacTaggert and Erik try to find Shaw, the mutants stay at home and continue to talk. However, instead of Shaw arriving in Russia, he sent Emma Frost in his stead and he himself (along with Azazel and Riptide) goes to attack Division X, where they kill everyone but the mutants. He offers them a chance to join him, but Angel is the only one who willingly accepts. Darwin attempts to fight back with the aid of Havok, but Shaw simply absorbs Havok's energy and kills Darwin with it.

With the facility destroyed and the employees dead, Charles takes the young mutants back to train at his family home in New York.

The mutants begin there training here, each one working their bodies and minds to hone in and shape their individual and unique abilities. Raven opts for physical training since her power stems from her body itself - though while she works out, she still maintains her 'human' shape. Erik sees her as such, and makes the comment that without the distraction, she would do much better. He proves this by casually lifting her weights from her hands while he speaks, then suddenly dropping them on her, causing Raven to immediately shift and catch the weights.

Later, Hank reveals to Raven that he believes he has found the cure to their appearances, and offers her the serum. Raven rejects it, telling him that they shouldn't have to hide. He counters that by telling her that she was hiding at that moment, and that she was beautiful when she wasn't blue and a 'freak'. Raven, unquestionably hurt, does not take the injection.

She goes to Erik (who's constant assurance of her true beauty was the main reason she refused the injection) and attempts to seduce him as a normal human woman. Again he tells her he prefers the real Raven - not the mask that she wears. They share a kiss, and Raven does not take the form of the blond woman again.

The next morning, they are outfitted in suits made by Hank, who is mysteriously absent and left only a note stating to meet him at the airplane. It is revealed upon arrival that Hank had injected himself with his serum, but it had backfired - instead of masking his physical abnormality, it only amplified it and caused him to take on a far more bestial appearance.

The entire team was instrumental in stopping the Cuban Missile Crisis stopping Shaw’s plan for world domination (by mutants). Raven was able to fool Azazel by appearing as Shaw, enabling them to hold the upper hand while Erik battled Shaw within the crashed submarine.

However, the team was split after the battle when instead of fighting each other, Americans and Russians both aimed their missiles at the beach on which the mutants had crashed. Erik warned them that humans would never accept mutants, and after a fight in which Charles was paralyzed by a bullet deflected by Erik, he left with Rip Tide, Raven, Angel and Azazel in tow. The last scene of the movie showcases Magneto introducing himself, and he and his team liberating Emma Frost.

Powers/Talents:
Mystique’s abilities are fairly unique and powerful. She has the ability to shape shift into literally anyone that she lays eyes on. There are very few limitations to this, but it is important to note that if injured in any form, she will retain that scar in any future forms she may take. She is also unable to mask her scent, and as a result of that those with heightened sense of smell will be able to see through her disguise.

Mystique is incredibly nimble and is portrayed with almost catlike reflexes - while in her natural, blue form her agility is increased, as well as her physical strength. Hand to hand combat skills are developed later, after her alliance with Magneto.

She also ages much slower than a regular human, and while others grow older around her, even in mutant form she maintains a relatively youthful appearance.

Personality:

Raven is a complex individual who seems to still be trying to find herself.

She longs to be accepted for who and what she is, and dislikes hiding behind the fake persona that she has created in order to fit in. She’s resentful of those that have no issue being with people – those with abilities that aren’t visible to the naked eye, like Charles. She’s afraid to be herself because if she is, people react very badly – It’s evidenced in the film that this has likely already happened. The first thing she asks of Charles when he sees her natural form is ‘You aren’t afraid of me?’, which does indicate previous encounters that have unfortunately gone wrong, likely beginning with Raven’s own parents.

Raven grew up in a time where no one knew anything about mutants, and she is therefore reluctant to reveal her powers to just anyone. Charles is, at the beginning, the only individual who is aware of what she can do, and what she looks like when she isn’t wearing a façade.

Unfortunately, he isn’t as fond of Raven’s true form as she would like him to be, and his preference to her blonde, 'normal' appearance stings her deeper than she admits. She poses the question to him: ‘Would you date me’? And his answer, vague in nature, does not satisfy her. Charles’s unwillingness to accept her as she is plays a pivotal role later in the film when she agrees to leave with Magneto.

Raven is also jealous of normal women – the scene when Charles is hitting on Amy in the bar, Raven gets upset because 1) she isn’t that girl and 2) she doesn’t think she’ll ever be afforded the luxury of being with someone. Even if she’s hit on, it’s not her; it’s just her mask that they are attracted to. It hurts her when people fall for that mask, because she doesn’t think she could ever be loved for what’s behind it.

On the outside, she is young-minded and even mischievous at times. She is very excited about meeting others with powers and is the first to joke about it. Raven is quick to nudge everyone in the direction of ‘showing off’, and even goes so far as to give everyone names, starting with herself.

Raven tends to gravitate towards people who she thinks could sympathize or understand her true form. That said, she is fast to fall in love (or what she might think is love) when she finds it - She jumps on Hank as soon as she saw he had something in common with her. But when he later rejects her natural form, calling her disguise ‘beautiful’, she quickly moves on to Erik - He had already told her previously that her natural form was perfect, and was thus far the only one that had truly accepted her.

She can be fairly forward as well, making to kiss Hank as he draws blood, or sitting in his lap when they were looking at her cells. She isn’t exactly shy, and is actually a pretty vivacious person despite the fear of her own self.

Raven's personality tends to conflict - She's both desperate for acceptance but refuses to come out of hiding. She's exuberant, but guarded, social but terrified of the opinions of others. It's not until the end of the film that she allows anyone a chance to see her true self, finally finding some small semblance of balance.

Strengths:
*vivacious
*enthusiasm
*outspoken
*very forward

Weaknesses:
*falls in love fast
*desperate for acceptance
*concerned about her appearance
*stubborn

Why would your character be chosen? Raven is, by her very nature, an incredibly unique individual. A mutant in her own world, Raven is forced to hide her true nature lest humans grow afraid and attempt to harm her, but her unique ability enables her to mask her true, blue self -- in any way she pleases. Raven's ability to shapeshift into anything would be enough to draw attention, let alone her own vivacious personality.

How much does your character know about nonhumans? Raven knows a fair amount about non humans, but only in the mutant sort of way. She's unfamiliar with aliens and the like, and probably wouldn't know anything about them.

Why this character: I played Raven ages ago when X:FC came out and played her until the game I had her in closed. She's a really great character and I love exploring her inner issues and having her finally come to terms with herself and just be okay with being different.

4. Samples
Please either include a first-person entry that could be your character's first post on The Network, or a third-person prose or action spam sample that could be your character's reaction to arriving in Dagaz. For the other two samples, links to previous character examples are fine.

First-Person:
[ There's a distinct clicking of a pen. Over and over, until finally Raven's voice pipes up. She doesn't sound happy and she's not really thinking all that clearly, either.

Moments away from panic, right here. ]

So I just kind of woke up in like, the creepiest way possible. Now, I'd almost think this was something Charles pulled, except he's not allowed in my head, and this isn't really his style. So, you know, I went looked around - you really got some really weird stuff going on around here.

[ Click. ]

Pretty groovy place. [ Click. Click. ]

If you don't like indoor plumbing and electricity and running water. [ A glance over her shoulder. ]

Which I do.

[ She absently chews on the end of the pen. It was probably Charles's at one point, found in her purse. It looks suitably gnawed on. She is entirely unapologetic. ]

Can anyone tell me what that's all about? Ooor...

How about this.

[ The pen is clicked shut a final time and her hazel eyes finally harden. ]

Someone could maybe tell me a little bit more about where I am and how I got here? Please?

Third-Person:
Music poured out of the car stereo as Raven sat in the passenger seat, legs crossed and eyes fixated on the window. Rain trickled down the glass in rivulets; it was five-thirty in the morning and being up this early had not been on her agenda.

It had been Charles that had roused her out of her deep slumber - her perfectly warm bed with the fluffy comforter and down pillow that she had cocooned herself in - by sitting hard on the bed and gently (but persistently) shaking her shoulder until she was unconsciously reaching for her brothers neck.

Just how he had gotten into her locked door, Raven still hadn't figured out.

"Honestly Raven. There is no reason to act so sullen about this." He stated as he rested slender hands on the wheel. "You would think I had done you some great harm."

"You woke me up at five in the morning, Charles," Raven grumbled, still pointedly staring out the window. "That is a 'great harm'." Acting childish or not, Raven wasn't pleased. "Whatever this surprise is had better be good."

"I think you'll find yourself singing a different tune, once we get there."

"Where is there? You didn't let me get dressed, I barely had time to change if you know what I mean, and now we're halfway across England in a Volvo I'm pretty sure that you didn't have last night." She finally looked at him, though her irritation was slowly ebbing.

"This. Better. Be. Good." He simply smiled at her, and she folded her arms in a huff and turned her face back to the window, staring outside. There was very little to be seen, unfortunately - the countryside was dark, the sun was still stubbornly hiding behind the shadow of the earth.

She took this opportunity to roll her entire body towards the window and tug her jacket around and over her head.

"Wake me up when we get there, you jerk."

A beat.

"Wherever there is."
